Welcome to the Patient Information Center. The information presented is intended to educate the general public on common dental topics. Many dental terms are commonly seen and heard in the print and broadcast media as well as in our daily conversations. However, many people do not completely understand these dental terms unless they have had first hand experience with them at their dentist's office.
This information is for educational purposes only and should not be used for self-diagnosis or as a substitute for a professional dental exam and consultation (no matter how much you hate going to the dentist). Each case will vary depending on the needs and concerns of each individual. We hope that this information will provide you with some basic dental knowledge so that you and your dentist can devise a plan to keep your smile healthy and looking great.
Root Canal Therapy If the nerve of the tooth (pulp) becomes infected or inflamed, root canal therapy is often the only way to save the tooth. Root canal therapy removes the nerve from the tooth, allowing the hard portion of the tooth to remain in place, and once restored, to become functional again. Root canal treatment also is often used as a tool to assist in restoration/reconstruction.
Cosmetic Dentistry Recent advances in dental materials and techniques allow the color, shape and alignment of your teeth to be improved. A great way to get the smile you have always wanted.
Dentures Dentures are a cost effective way to restore ones appearance as well as function. Full and partial dentures that look natural can restore the ability to chew more effectively. Many people believe that once they have dentures they no longer need regular dental care. Denture wearers require regular checkups and maintenance to ensure their health, comfort and appearance.
Preventive Dentistry Early detection is the key in avoiding costly and extensive dental treatment. Small areas of decay can often be treated with fluoride therapy to stop the progression of decay. Dental sealants can be placed in the grooves on top of teeth to prevent decay from occurring in this susceptible area. Routine dental cleanings can help prevent periodontal or gum disease.
Periodontal Disease This is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Bacteria can build up on the surfaces of the roots and cause the loss of the supporting bone of the tooth. Because the early form of periodontal disease is painless and has few symptoms, regular dental visits are essential for early diagnosis and treatment.
Restoring Damaged Teeth When teeth are decayed or broken, artificial materials are used to repair them. Ask our dentists if silver fillings, tooth colored fillings, gold, porcelain or other advanced ceramics are right for you.
Dental Implants For people who have lost teeth, implants can provide artificial teeth that look more natural: and feel more secure. Implants can replace single or multiple teeth as well as help retain a partial or full denture.
Extraction The goal of modern dentistry is to prevent tooth loss and repair decayed or broken teeth. There are situations in which the removal of a tooth is our only option.
Intraoral Camera We use a small camera to take close up pictures of teeth in order to better explain why treatment is necessary. The intraoral camera can also assist in diagnosis of dental problems due to its extremely high magnification capabilities. |
